Prof. Maria Schnitter, DSc., started her academic career in 1984 at the Paisij Hilendarski University of Plovdiv. As a grantee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, since 1992 she has specialised in the Slavic Seminars of the Freiburg University and in Würzburg, in HU-Berlin and in Thomas Institute in Cologne. From 1999-2003 Maria Schnitter was a visiting lector for Bulgarian Literature and Culture in the Institute of Slavonic Studies of the University of Vienna, Austria. After her return to Bulgaria in 2004 she became a Founder Dean of the Faculty for Philosophy and History at the University of Plovdiv, a position she held from 2004 to 2013. She is currently the Head of the Department of Theology at the University of Plovdiv. Prof. Maria Schnitter is best known as a scholar in mediaeval studies and anthropology of religion.
